iPhone Backup Extraction: Photos & Messages
An old backup may preserve something your current phone no longer has. Start with the source, then check what is actually readable.
What does an iPhone backup extractor do?
A backup extractor reads supported records and files that already exist in a backup. It can help locate a retained photo or conversation without restoring that backup over your current phone. It cannot create data that was never saved, or guarantee recovery of permanently deleted items.
Before checking a backup
Keep the original backup untouched and work on a copy where possible. Note which phone it belongs to, its date, its size and whether it is encrypted. A date before deletion is useful evidence to investigate, not proof that an item is included.
Use only data you are authorized to access. Choose a separate export folder with enough space; do not overwrite the source. If the source is incomplete, retain that label in the results.
Current development scope
The local prototype works with supported, readable, unencrypted iPhone backups. Development work includes retained SMS records, contacts, call records and available media/files. It is not a universal backup reader; app data and backup layouts vary. No public installer or browser-based extraction is available here.
Encrypted-backup decryption, device-lock bypass and direct iCloud extraction are outside the current supported workflow. Knowing a password does not make encrypted input supported by this prototype.
Know what was actually found
An original or retained full-size copy is different from a thumbnail. A database record or filename may be only a clue: it does not prove the underlying file is present. Message text can exist while its attachment is missing. Review the source, dimensions, readability and completeness before choosing an export.
Choose the next step
Looking for photos? Compare original files, previews and other copies. Looking for SMS or iMessage? Read the export guide for retained records and CSV/JSON limits. No files are uploaded, checked or exported by reading these guides.
